Content Gate Secure (WordPress only)

Some content is too valuable to give away: research, forecasts, white papers, reports you paid to produce. Content Gate Secure keeps those pages and files closed until a visitor raises a hand. Our other gates keep pages readable to search engines. This one keeps your material away from search engines and AI crawlers as well.

Content Gate Secure is for WordPress websites only. It works through the Bread & Butter WordPress plugin, because keeping content out of search engines means it can't load until someone has raised a hand, and only the plugin, running on your own WordPress site, can hold it back.

In short: Content Gate Secure is a WordPress-only gate, set up in the Bread & Butter WordPress plugin. It closes whole pages, folders or files until a visitor raises a hand. Anyone who tries to open one sees a blurred screen with your message and the options to continue with Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Apple or a verified email address. Once they do, they're taken straight to the content, and they become an Engaged Lead in your CRM. The content doesn't load until someone has raised a hand, so search engines and AI crawlers can't read it. Not on WordPress? A short script can ask visitors before they open a page and send anyone arriving from outside your site to a page you choose, but it isn't Content Gate Secure: the page is still published, so search engines can still read it.

Why use Content Gate Secure

  • Built for your most valuable material. Original research, direct PDF downloads, market forecasts and industry reports: anything where you want a real person with a working email address in exchange for your work.
  • Private by design. Unlike Content Gate Classic and Content Gate Preview, Content Gate Secure keeps your content out of search engines and AI crawlers. That's on purpose. If you don't want AI companies collecting your work to train their models, content that only loads once a person raises a hand can't be collected that way. It also means this gate isn't the right choice for content you want found in search.
  • Gate a page or a whole folder. Close individual pages, or whole sections of premium content at once.
  • Your message. Write your own text, so visitors know exactly what they'll get.
  • Quick for visitors. One click with an account they already have, a one-click link sent to their inbox, or an email address with a password and PIN. Everyone who says yes lands in your Engaged Leads tab with a researched profile.

How it works

When a visitor tries to open a gated page or file, they see a blurred screen with your message and the options to continue. They raise a hand first, then they're taken straight to the content. The content doesn't load until they have, so it stays out of public view.

Set up Content Gate Secure in the WordPress plugin

You need the Bread & Butter WordPress plugin installed and connected. See Wordpress Plugin Installation.

You choose what visitors are asked for: social login, a one-click link sent to their inbox (shown as Sign in link in the settings), an email address with a password and PIN, or their first and last name.

Step 1: Open the settings

In your WordPress admin, click Bread and Butter in the left menu.

Step 2: Choose your pages

Click Content Gate Secure in the left menu, then scroll down to the setup section. Start typing the pages or post categories you want to gate, and pick them from the list. You can choose one or many.

Step 3: Write your message

Leave any field blank to use the default text shown in it, which is translated into every language we support.

  • First paragraph: the main message, shown beside the options on the blurred screen.
  • Second paragraph: a supporting line just below it.
  • Third paragraph: the text below the second paragraph. A good place to say what the visitor gets.
  • Third paragraph expanded: extra text shown when the visitor clicks to expand, such as more detail, terms or reasons to say yes.
  • Expand trigger: the text the visitor clicks to see the expanded paragraph. We suggest starting with "more >>".

Step 4: Destination (optional)

If you've set a global destination URL in your app settings and don't want it to apply to these pages, turn on Override Registration Destination URL. If you haven't set one, skip this step.

Step 5: Save

Click Save. Your pages are now gated, and they only open for visitors who have raised a hand.

Not on WordPress?

Content Gate Secure doesn't work on other platforms, such as Webflow, Squarespace or Shopify. You can still gate your content with Content Gate Classic (SEO-friendly) or Content Gate Preview (Most Powerful). Both ask visitors to raise a hand before they read on, while search engines and AI assistants can still read the page.
