Content Gate Classic (SEO-friendly)
Your best content deserves something back: a real person with a working email address. Content Gate Classic asks visitors to raise a hand before they read the rest of a page, while search engines and AI assistants can still read all of it, so the page keeps showing up in search and in AI answers.

In short: Content Gate Classic puts a pop-up over the pages you choose, asking visitors to continue with Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Apple or a verified email address before they read on. Search engines and AI assistants still read the whole page. You choose when the gate appears: as soon as the page opens, after a set number of seconds, or once the visitor has scrolled part of the way. Everyone who says yes becomes an Engaged Lead in your CRM, and they're never asked again anywhere on your website. You set it up in the Bread & Butter WordPress plugin, for your whole website or page by page. It's also the gate Auto-Gate uses when it picks your pages for you.
Gated, and still found in search
Gating used to mean hiding a page from search engines. Content Gate Classic doesn't. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and other search engines and AI assistants can read, index and recommend the full page, while people are asked to raise a hand before reading on.
Why use Content Gate Classic
- Your choice of options. Offer email only, a verified email address with a PIN, or up to 20 social login providers such as Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn and Apple.
- The best option first. Bread & Butter picks the option each visitor is most likely to use and shows it first.
- Asked once, never again. Once a visitor has raised a hand, they have a secure session across your whole website, so they aren't asked again on any of your gated pages, forms or tools.
- Your words, your colours. Change the text, image and colours to match your website.
- Terms and privacy built in. Links to your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are shown on the gate.
- Straight to your CRM. The moment someone says yes, their verified, researched profile appears in your Engaged Leads tab and your Nurture Action Queue, and syncs to your CRM.
How it works
Pick the pages worth gating, such as guides, research, webinars, templates and floor plans, and choose when the gate appears:
- Immediately: as soon as the page opens. Best for content people come specifically to get, such as a report.
- After a time delay: the visitor reads freely for a set number of seconds first.
- After a scroll: the visitor reads part of the page first, and the gate appears once they scroll past the point you set.
The gate covers the rest of the page. The visitor continues with an account they already have, or a verified email address, and reads on.

You also choose what visitors are asked for: an email address only, their first and last name as well, a verified email address with a password and PIN, a one-click link sent to their inbox (shown as Sign in link in the settings), or social login.

Let Auto-Gate choose the pages for you
Not sure which pages to gate, or when to ask? Switch on Auto-Gate, and Bread & Butter picks the pages worth gating, writes a pop-up title about each page's topic and asks the visitors most likely to say yes, at the moment they're most likely to say it. It uses Content Gate Classic, works on any website with no code, and leaves alone any page you've gated yourself. See Conversion tools overview.
