Health check

Who this is for: marketers and website owners who want to know everything is working, and agencies and resellers who look after several accounts.

What you'll learn: what the Health check looks at, how to read a green check, a red cross and a grey dash, how it runs with your other reports, and how agencies see every account side by side.

Most problems on a website are quiet. A form stops sending, an ad campaign loses its tags, a firewall starts turning AI crawlers away, a security certificate is about to expire. Nobody notices until the leads drop. The Health check looks at all of it every time your reports run, and tells you in ten seconds whether everything is working, and what to do about anything that isn't.

The Health check: 30 checks across tracking, lead capture, research, ads, AI assistants and your website, each one a green check, a red cross or a grey dash, with what to do for anything red.

In short: The Health check is a ready-made report your AI assistant builds from your Bread & Butter data. It runs 30 checks in six groups: tracking, lead capture, research and delivery, ads, AI assistants and LLMs, and your website. Each check is a green check (fine), a red cross (needs attention, with what to do in one sentence) or a grey dash (doesn't apply to your account, or couldn't run). The checks are always the same 30, in the same order, so two months or two accounts compare at a glance. It runs with your other reports, and when you run any single report, your assistant tells you in one line if a check needs attention. With several accounts, it shows them side by side. Owners, Administrators and Marketers can run it.

What the report answers

Is everything working? How many checks passed, and the ones that need attention, at the top.

What changed since last time? New problems, the ones that were fixed, and the ones still open.

What do I do about it? Every red check says what to do, in plain words, and links to the report that shows more.

What's in it

The summary. A ring with how many of the checks that apply passed, the count of each state, the list of checks that need attention (each linked to its row), and what changed since the last run.

The summary card of a sample Health check: 25 of 29 checks passed, four that need attention, and what changed since the last run.

The checks. One card per group, with the checks always in this order. Each row has its number, the check's name, one line with the result, what to do when it's red, and a link to dig further in the report that shows it.

The Ads card of a sample Health check: six checks passed, and one red check with what to do about it.

How to read it

Green check: the check ran and it's fine.

Red cross: the check ran and it needs attention. It always says what to do, for example "Connect your Meta ads account in Bread & Butter, so its spend and campaigns show next to Google Ads."

Grey dash: the check doesn't apply to your account, for example the Slack check when Slack isn't set up, or the research checks on the Free plan. It's also grey when it couldn't run, for example when your AI assistant can't open web pages to read your robots.txt.

A check is never red because data is missing. Each one has a fixed level at which it turns red, the same for every account, such as direct traffic at 40% of visits or more, or a security certificate with fewer than 30 days left.

How it runs with your other reports

With every report run. Run all my Bread & Butter reports builds the Health check in its place, just before the Old School Website Analytics.

With a single report. When you run any other report, your assistant runs the checks quietly too. If one is red, it adds one line to its reply, for example "One health check needs attention: AI crawlers haven't visited in 7 weeks. Ask for the Health check to see it." The other report stays as it is.

Technical items live here. The Executive report and the Report for Your Boss never include setup or technical items. Anything for your web team is in the Health check. See Executive report.

Every account side by side

If you look after several accounts, ask for the Health check without naming one, or ask for all of them, and you get every account side by side: one column per account, three to a landscape page, in alphabetical order so each one sits in the same place every month.

A sample Health check for every account of a fictional agency: one column per account, each with its score, what needs attention and all 30 checks lined up across the columns.

Each column shows the account's score, up to five checks that need attention, and all 30 checks with their icons, lined up across the columns. Under each column is the prompt to open the full Health check for that account.

How to run it

Connect your AI assistant to Bread & Butter first. See Bread & Butter MCP server connections.

  • "Run my Bread & Butter Health check."
  • "Run my Bread & Butter Health check for last month, for my main website."
  • "Run my Bread & Butter Health check for all my accounts."

It covers the same period as your other reports, monthly by default, or the last 30 days when you ask for it on its own.

Checks that open your website. The llms.txt, robots.txt, security certificate and speed checks need your AI assistant to open web pages. When it can't, those checks show grey.

On a schedule. It's in every Reports email, and you can ask your assistant to run it every Monday. See Run your Bread & Butter reports on a schedule.

Each run uses credits. See How do Credits work across storage, syncing, and profile enrichment?

What it needs

Bread & Butter installed on your website. See How to Install Bread & Butter on Your Website.

Everything else is optional. A check for something you haven't set up, such as an ads account, a CRM or Slack, shows grey.
