Bread & Butter for Auto Dealers
Who this is for: franchise and independent dealerships, dealer groups, and the internet sales managers, BDC teams, sales managers and marketers who run them.
What you'll learn: how to see the weeks of research a buyer does on your website before they call, how to know when a customer with a lease coming up is back looking at new models, how to turn your payment calculator, trade-in tool and pricing into leads worth calling, and which campaigns bring buyers rather than tyre-kickers.
Car buyers do most of their shopping before they speak to anyone. They compare models, build payments, value their trade-in and read your inventory pages across several visits and several websites. By the time a lead form arrives, the decision is often half made, and the dealer who knew what they were looking at has the better conversation.
In short: Bread & Butter records every visit to your website from the first one and joins them into one journey per person: the vehicle pages, the payment calculator, the trade-in tool, the specials and the lease pages, over as many days and sessions as it takes. Focused Score rates how seriously each visitor is behaving. Nobody is named until they act, and one-click social login on your calculator, trade-in, pricing and booking pages makes acting easy and gives you a real name and email instead of a fake one. When a known customer comes back, for example months before their lease ends to look at the new model, your team hears about it while they're still on the site, instead of waiting for a CRM timer to say it's time to call. And over time you learn which campaigns, sources and search terms bring buyers.
What makes car dealerships different
Buyers arrive already decided about a lot. Cox Automotive's 2025 Car Buyer Journey study found buyers visited an average of 4.6 websites during their search. By the time they contact you, they've compared models, payments and dealers. What they looked at on your site is the best clue to what they want.
Buyers want to do more online than they do. In the same study, 48% of buyers wanted to apply for credit online but only 33% did, and 37% wanted to settle the price online but only 19% did. The tools that close that gap (payment calculators, trade-in valuations, credit applications and online pricing) are also the most valuable moments on your site.
Your best prospects are customers you already have. Lease customers, finance customers and service customers come back to your site long before they come back to the showroom. A lease customer looking at the new model eight months before maturity is a better lead than any conquest campaign.
Timers aren't intent. Your CRM knows when a lease ends and schedules a call for 90 days before. It doesn't know that the customer spent twenty minutes on your site last night building a payment on next year's model.
The words you use, and the words you'll see
Bread & Butter is used by software companies, brokerages and retailers alike, so its labels are deliberately general. Here is the translation.
- A visitor is a shopper who hasn't given you their name or email on your website yet. You'll find them in All Traffic, and on the Focused Tab if they're behaving like a serious buyer.
- An Engaged Lead is a shopper who has told you who they are: a lead form, a trade-in valuation, a credit application, a test drive booking, a service appointment, or a one-click social login on a gated tool.
- Focused Score, 1 to 10, is how seriously this person is behaving. It sits on every profile and on every tab.
- Won/Closed is a sold vehicle, the lead stage you set on the profile when the deal is done in the showroom.
- Source and Attribution is where the shopper came from: a search term, a Google Ads campaign, a third-party marketplace listing, a Facebook post or an email.
- A custom funnel is a saved list that becomes its own tab, built from web filters: everyone who arrived from a particular campaign, everyone within a region, everyone who triggered a particular event.
- A user event is an action you name, such as "Used payment calculator" or "Opened lease-end page", recorded on the journey whenever it happens.
- The Intelligence Brief is the write-up your team reads before calling, delivered to your CRM, Slack or email.
- An exit destination is a click out of your site, for example to a marketplace listing, a competitor or a review site.
What you'll use most
One journey per shopper. Every visit a shopper makes is joined to the ones before it: the search results they browsed, the vehicle detail pages they came back to, the trim comparisons, the payment calculator, the trade-in tool, the specials page. When they finally act, the whole history arrives with them. Your salesperson knows it's the hybrid SUV in grey they've looked at five times over two weeks, not just "a new internet lead". See What is Focused Score and how does it evaluate my traffic?
Lease-end customers, by intent instead of by timer. When a customer who has given you their email on your website before (a service booking, a trade-in valuation, an earlier lead) comes back, the new visit joins their journey and your team is alerted on the mobile app, in Slack or in your CRM while they're still on the site. See How do I install the Bread & Butter mobile applications?
So when a lease customer starts looking at the new model months before maturity, you know that night, not when the CRM's 90-day reminder fires. Set up a user event on your lease-end or lease-return page and you can build a funnel of everyone who has opened it, with their Focused Score beside each name. See What are User Events, and how do I use them?
Your high-value tools, turned into real leads. The payment calculator, the trade-in valuation, the "unlock our price" button, the credit application, the test drive booking: these are the moments a shopper shows they're serious. They're also where most dealers either lose the shopper to a long form or collect a fake email.
Bread & Butter adds one-click social login to those moments. The shopper continues with Google, Apple, Microsoft or Facebook, you get their real name and verified email, and the tool opens. No twelve-field form, no "mickeymouse@gmail.com".
- Instant Lead Capture opens the one-click prompt when a shopper clicks through to a page you've chosen, such as your payment calculator or credit application. See Instant Lead Capture (Most Effective)
- Content Gate Preview shows part of a page, such as your pricing or a vehicle's full details, and asks the shopper to continue to see the rest. One click unlocks every gated page on your site. See Content Gate Preview (Most Powerful)
- Form Booster adds one-click social login to the forms you already have, so the trade-in, test drive or credit form fills in the name and email for them. See Form Booster (Works with your existing forms)
You gate the page or the link, not the tool itself, so your calculator, trade-in and credit vendors keep working exactly as they do now. See What types of content gates do you offer, and when should I use them?
The shoppers who are close to buying. The Focused Tab holds every shopper who has told you who they are, plus the visitors who haven't yet but are behaving like buyers. It's ordered by most recent visit, so the people active now are at the top. See What is the Focused Tab, and how is it different from Engaged Leads?
Marketing that brings buyers, not clicks. Dealers spend heavily on search, marketplaces, social and display. The Attribution Report shows each source, campaign and keyword against the quality of the shoppers it sent, not just the number. Connect Google Ads and you also see what each serious shopper costs. LinkedIn, Meta and Reddit are coming soon. Over three to six months, as you mark sales Won/Closed, every source is ranked Scale, Watch or Investigate against your own store. See How do I use the Attribution report to optimize my marketing budget?
How your team uses it day to day
Internet sales and BDC: call with context. Every lead arrives with the vehicles they looked at, the payment they built, whether they valued a trade and how many times they came back. The first call starts from their shortlist, not from "what are you looking for?".
Sales managers: see who's heating up. The Focused Tab and the alerts show which known customers are active on the site right now, including lease and finance customers who haven't raised their hand yet.
Service to sales: spot the upgrade. A service customer who booked an oil change and is now reading about the new model's features is a sales conversation waiting to happen. Their service booking named them; their browsing shows what's next.
Marketing: budgets judged by sales. Build funnels by campaign, by source, by region, and watch the Focused Ratio inside each one. Report on how many serious shoppers each campaign brought and what they cost.
The signals that matter at a dealership
The same vehicle, again and again. A shopper returning to one vehicle detail page is narrowing down. If they're named, it's time to call. If not, they're on your Focused Tab.
A payment built, a trade valued, a credit application started. The three strongest buying signals on a dealer website. Each one is a moment to offer one-click social login.
Lease-end and loyalty pages. A current lease customer reading about lease-end options or loyalty offers is deciding what's next, often months before your CRM says so.
A known customer looking at new models. A finance or lease customer browsing next year's model, or a service customer comparing trims, is in the market.
Clicked through to a marketplace or a competitor. Comparing before they commit. Exit Destinations show where they went.
Common scenarios
A lease customer, eight months early. A customer whose lease ends in the spring filled in a service booking on your site last year. In September they're back on your site three evenings in a row, building payments on the new model and reading the lease-end page. Your sales manager gets an alert on the first evening, sees the journey, and calls with an early upgrade offer. The CRM's reminder would have fired in January.
A shopper who wants the price. A shopper arrives from a search ad, looks at a vehicle and clicks "unlock our price". One click with Google shows the price and names them. The Brief lands in your CRM with the vehicle, the source and the search term, and they've already told you which trim they want.
A trade-in valuation. A shopper uses the trade-in tool through a one-click prompt. Your team knows who they are, what they drive and which vehicles they've been looking at, before the valuation email has even arrived.
You want to know which campaigns sell cars. Filter by source, campaign or search term, save it as a funnel, and watch the Focused Ratio inside it. Mark sales Won/Closed and, over a few months, every campaign is ranked by the buyers it brings.
Funnels are built from web filters, so they can't be built from your inventory or prices. There's no funnel for "everyone who looked at trucks over fifty thousand dollars", and there's no filter for one specific page. Use a campaign, a landing page or a user event instead.
Getting set up
- Install the tracking script on your website. WordPress sites use the plugin. Most dealer website platforms add third-party scripts through their own partner programme or a dealer-owned Google Tag Manager container, so ask your website provider how they add a tracking script. If your credit application or trade-in tool runs on a subdomain you control, add the script there too. See How to Install Bread & Butter on Your Website
- Leave your forms alone. Lead forms, trade-in, test drive, credit and service booking forms are picked up as they are.
- Add one-click social login to your high-value tools. Start with the payment calculator, pricing and trade-in.
- Set up user events for lease-end, loyalty and specials pages, so you can build funnels from them.
- Connect where your team works. Salesforce, HubSpot and Pipedrive connect directly; other dealer CRMs can receive leads by email, through Zapier or a webhook. Check with your CRM provider how it accepts leads. See Integrations and Automation: what you can send, where, and when
- Mark sales Won/Closed. It's the one habit that makes the scoring and campaign rankings sharper.
Common questions
Does this tell me who is browsing my inventory? No, and we wouldn't want it to. Nobody is named until they tell you who they are. For everyone else you see how many serious shoppers visited, what they looked at and where they came from. See How is Bread & Butter different from "visitor identification" tools that track people without consent?
Will it recognise my existing lease customers? It recognises anyone who has given their email on your website before, through a form, a service booking or a social login. The more of your customers do something on your site, such as booking service online, the more lease-end returns you'll see.
Will gating our calculator put shoppers off? A one-click social login is much less friction than a form, and you choose what to gate. A good approach is to keep inventory open and gate the tools that signal a serious buyer: price, payment, trade-in and credit.
What do you find out about shoppers? Only what's useful and appropriate: their name and location, and their employer where the research finds one. Fleet and commercial buyers are researched as the businesses they are. See What is Profile Enrichment, and what does it find?
How long before it's useful? Tracking and scoring start on the next visit after the script goes live, and shoppers arrive with their history attached from the first form they fill in. After about fifteen days your Focused Ratio has enough history to compare against the benchmark.
Outcome
Your team stops calling internet leads cold and starts calling the shopper who built a payment on the grey hybrid three times this week. Lease customers are reached when they start looking, not when a timer fires. Your calculator, pricing and trade-in tools produce real names instead of fake emails. And within a few months you know which campaigns sell cars.
