Install Bread & Butter on Shopify

Shopify has the richest set of native ecommerce tools of any platform we support, a real Contact Us page, a native newsletter signup section, built-in abandoned checkout emails, and Bread & Butter connects to all of it the same simple way it connects to Google Analytics or HubSpot: one script, no plugin. Paste it into your theme and it tracks how real visitors move through your store, all the way to the cart.

In short: one script in your Shopify theme connects your store to Bread & Butter, no app install and no developer required. It shows you who's a genuine buyer, not just a pageview, and which products or campaigns are actually driving qualified interest. It also picks up Shopify's native Contact Us form and newsletter signup automatically. Checkout itself is currently outside what any tracking script can see on Shopify, more on that below.

Once it's running, Bread & Butter watches how real visitors move through your store, not just how many pages loaded. It identifies who's showing genuine buying intent, builds a profile of what they're interested in, and surfaces that to you as a ranked list of your best leads instead of a wall of traffic numbers. For a Shopify store, that means you can finally see which products, pages, or campaigns are actually driving qualified interest, and which ones are just generating clicks that go nowhere.

This also means you get visibility into how far visitors get before checkout. Bread & Butter tracks the full journey through your store, including reaching the cart, so you can see where interest builds and where it stalls before someone commits to buying. Checkout itself is a different story on Shopify specifically. As of August 26, 2026, Shopify retired the mechanism that used to let any tracking script run on the checkout and order status pages, so no script, from us or anyone else, can see or identify a visitor once they move from the cart into checkout. If a visitor already identified themselves earlier in their visit, for example by filling out the Contact Us form or the newsletter signup, you'll still know who they are when they reach checkout. If they haven't, you'll see that the cart was reached, just not by whom, and that visibility currently ends there rather than continuing into checkout the way it does on some other platforms.

Frequently asked questions for Shopify

Does this work on any Shopify plan? Yes. Editing theme code, which is all the install requires, is available on every Shopify plan that includes a full online store, starting with Basic Shopify.

Will this interfere with Shopify Payments or my checkout? No. Bread & Butter's tracking never reaches the checkout step. This isn't a Bread & Butter limitation, it's a Shopify platform change. Shopify removed the Additional Scripts field from checkout settings on August 26, 2026, which is what used to let any script run on the checkout and order status pages. That affected every tracking and analytics tool that relied on it, not just us.

Can you see who reaches checkout, or who abandons it? Bread & Butter tracks that a visitor reached the cart, but can't identify them at checkout on its own right now, for the platform reason above. If that same visitor identified themselves earlier in the visit, for instance by filling out the Contact Us form or newsletter signup, you'll know who they are and that they reached checkout. If they never identified themselves, you'll see the cart was reached without a name attached to it.

Do I need a developer to install this? No. It's the same copy-and-paste step you'd use to add Google Analytics, into your theme's code before the closing </head>  tag.

Does this work with a custom domain, or only a myshopify.com subdomain? Either. The tracking script is embedded in the page itself, so it works the same way regardless of what domain your store is published under.

Does this track my native Contact Us form and newsletter signup too? Yes. If a visitor submits your Contact Us page or signs up through Shopify's native newsletter signup section, Bread & Butter identifies them and connects that to the rest of their browsing activity on your store.

Bread & Butter Conversion Tools: If you want a dedicated on-site tool to capture emails or identify visitors, beyond your native forms, Bread & Butter also offers its own suite of optional Conversion Tools, floating lead capture forms with one-click social login, content gating for premium assets, and AI-triggered incentive popups, that plug directly into your Bread & Butter account, no separate app required. See our Conversion Tools overview for the full list.

What about customer account sign-up or login, does that identify someone? It depends on which account system your store uses. If you're on Shopify's newer customer accounts, sign-up and login happen on a Shopify-hosted page rather than your own domain, so that step currently isn't something the script can see. If your store still uses legacy customer accounts hosted on your own domain, sign-up and login are tracked the same as any other on-site form.

What if my checkout runs on a separate domain or subdomain, possibly on different technology? This is common, for example a main site on WordPress with a store on a separate Shopify-hosted domain. Bread & Butter doesn't use cookies, it uses a GDPR-compliant identifier stored locally in the visitor's browser. Install the same tracking script on each domain, and Bread & Butter reconciles the activity into one visitor journey, even across different platforms.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Get your tracking script

  • Log into your Bread & Butter Dashboard
  • Go to Settings > App & Domains
  • Add your Shopify subdomain or custom domain
  • Copy the JavaScript tracking snippet provided (it includes your unique App ID)

If you're already using Google Tag Manager on your Shopify store, this is the easiest and most reliable way to install Bread & Butter, and it's the method we recommend. See our full Google Tag Manager installation guide for more detail. This covers the same storefront pages the script itself would, home, product, collection, and cart pages, not checkout.

Step 2: Add the script as a GTM tag

  • In your GTM container, create a new tag and choose Custom HTML
  • Paste the Bread & Butter tracking snippet into the tag
  • Set the trigger to All Pages
  • Save and Submit to publish the container

Step 3: Confirm it's working

  • Open your live Shopify store in a new browser or incognito window
  • Return to your Bread & Butter Dashboard and confirm visitor data is coming in

Managing the script through GTM also means future updates or changes to your tracking setup don't require editing your Shopify theme directly.

Alternative: Manual install via theme.liquid

If you're not using Google Tag Manager, install directly in Shopify instead.

Step 2: Add it to Shopify

  • Log into your Shopify admin
  • Go to Online Store > Themes
  • Find your current theme, click the "..." menu, and choose Edit code
  • Open theme.liquid
  • Paste the tracking script just before the closing </head>  tag
  • Click Save

Step 3: Confirm it's working

  • Open your live Shopify store in a new browser or incognito window
  • Return to your Bread & Butter Dashboard and confirm visitor data is coming in

Troubleshooting: If data isn't showing up, double-check that your App ID in the script matches your dashboard, and confirm your live Shopify URL is listed under Settings > App & Domains.
