Install Bread & Butter on Circle.so
Circle is built around membership, not a shopping cart, so the moment that matters most isn't checkout, it's when someone joins your community. Becoming a member, free or paid, requires creating an account with a name and email, which means Circle already does more of the identification work for you than a typical ecommerce platform does. Bread & Butter connects the same simple way it connects to Google Analytics or HubSpot: one script, no plugin.
In short: one script connects your Circle community to Bread & Butter, no plugin and no developer required. It shows you who's a genuine prospective member, not just a pageview, and which content, campaigns, or spaces are actually driving people to join. Because joining a Circle community already requires an account, most visitors who convert are identified automatically, not just the ones who happen to fill out a form.
Once it's running, Bread & Butter watches how real visitors move through your public pages, before they ever join, and identifies who's showing genuine interest based on what they browse and engage with. It builds a profile of what they're interested in and surfaces that to you as a ranked list of your best leads instead of a wall of traffic numbers. For a community or membership business, that means you can finally see which content, spaces, or campaigns are actually driving people toward joining, and which ones are just generating clicks that go nowhere.
This also means the identification story on Circle looks different than it does on an ecommerce site. Joining your community, whether it's a free space or a paid membership, requires creating an account with a name and email, and that happens on your own Circle domain, so Bread & Butter picks it up the same way it picks up any other native form fill. Paid memberships run through Circle's own paywall, powered by Stripe. That specific payment step works a little differently depending on your setup, so treat it as a secondary detail. Either way, once someone has created an account to join, whether or not they've paid yet, you'll know who they are.
Frequently asked questions for Circle.so
Does this work on any Circle plan? We haven't been able to confirm from Circle's public plan documentation whether custom code snippets are limited to certain tiers. Check under Settings > Code Snippets in your own Circle admin panel to confirm you have access; if you don't see that option, Google Tag Manager may still work depending on your plan.
Will this interfere with Stripe or my paid membership checkout? No. Bread & Butter's tracking never touches payment processing or card data, regardless of which pages it runs on.
Can you identify someone when they join the community, even before they pay for a membership? Yes. Joining a Circle community, free or paid, requires creating an account with a name and email, and that happens on your own Circle domain. Bread & Butter picks that up the same way it picks up any other native form fill, so you'll typically know who someone is as soon as they join, before any payment step.
Can you see who completes a paid membership checkout specifically? Circle's paid membership checkout is powered by Stripe. In practice this matters less than it would on an ecommerce site, since most members create an account, and get identified, before or as part of upgrading to a paid membership.
Do I need a developer to install this? No. It's a copy-and-paste step into Circle's Code Snippets panel, the same place you'd add Google Analytics or a Facebook Pixel.
Does this work with a custom domain, or only a circle.so subdomain? Either. The tracking script is embedded in the page itself, so it works the same way regardless of what domain your community is published under.
Does this track people who join or sign up for my community? Yes. Account creation is the core native form on Circle, and Bread & Butter identifies a member as soon as they sign up, connecting that to everything they did on your public pages beforehand.
Bread & Butter Conversion Tools: If you want a dedicated on-site tool to capture emails or identify visitors before they reach your join or sign-up flow, Bread & Butter also offers its own suite of optional Conversion Tools, floating lead capture forms with one-click social login, content gating for premium assets, and AI-triggered incentive popups, that plug directly into your Bread & Butter account, no separate app required. See our Conversion Tools overview for the full list.
What if my main website and my Circle community run on separate domains? This is common, for example a main site on WordPress or Squarespace with your community hosted on a separate Circle-branded domain. Bread & Butter doesn't use cookies, it uses a GDPR-compliant identifier stored locally in the visitor's browser. Install the same tracking script on each domain, and Bread & Butter reconciles the activity into one visitor journey, even across different platforms.
