Install Bread & Butter on Carrd

Carrd is built for simple, single-page sites, landing pages, portfolios, link pages, not full ecommerce. Bread & Butter installs the same way it does everywhere else, one script, no plugin, and it works with Carrd's native contact and signup forms right out of the box.

In short: one script connects your Carrd site to Bread & Butter, no plugin and no developer required. It shows you who's a genuine prospect, not just a pageview, and which pages or campaigns are actually driving qualified interest. It also picks up Carrd's native contact and signup forms automatically.

Once it's running, Bread & Butter watches how real visitors move through your Carrd site, not just how many pages loaded. It identifies who's showing genuine interest, builds a profile of what they're interested in, and surfaces that to you as a ranked list of your best leads instead of a wall of traffic numbers. For a landing page or one-page site, that means you can finally see which sections, links, or campaigns are actually driving qualified interest, and which ones are just generating clicks that go nowhere.

Because Carrd isn't an ecommerce platform, it doesn't have its own cart or checkout. If you're using Carrd's Payments widget to sell something, it hands the visitor off entirely to Stripe's own hosted Checkout page or to PayPal, a completely separate domain outside your Carrd site. Bread & Butter has no visibility into that step at all, not even that a visitor reached it, since it never happens on your site. This isn't a Bread & Butter limitation, Carrd was never built to host a checkout of its own. If a visitor already identified themselves earlier on your page, for instance by filling out a contact or signup form, you'll know who they are up to the point they click through to Stripe or PayPal.

Frequently asked questions for Carrd

Does this work on any Carrd plan? You'll need at least the Pro Standard plan. Custom code embeds, which is how the tracking script gets installed, aren't available on the free plan or Pro Lite. Note that this is different from what's needed to sell something on Carrd: Stripe Checkout and PayPal widgets require the higher Pro Plus plan, but the tracking script itself only needs Pro Standard.

Will this interfere with Stripe or PayPal payments? No. Bread & Butter's script never touches Stripe or PayPal, since those run entirely outside your Carrd site once a visitor clicks through.

Can you see who completes a payment through Stripe or PayPal? No. Because Carrd hands off to Stripe's or PayPal's own hosted pages for payment, Bread & Butter has no visibility into that step, this is a harder boundary than most platforms, where at least the cart itself stays on-site. If a visitor identified themselves earlier, for instance through a contact or signup form, you'll know who they were up to the point they left your page for Stripe or PayPal.

Do I need a developer to install this? No. It's a copy-and-paste step using Carrd's Embed element, the same way you'd add a Google Analytics or Meta Pixel snippet.

Does this work with a custom domain, or only a carrd.co subdomain? Either. The tracking script is embedded in the page itself, so it works the same way regardless of what domain your site is published under.

Does this track my native Carrd contact and signup forms too? Yes. If a visitor submits a contact form or signup form, including ones connected to Mailchimp, Kit, ActiveCampaign, or similar tools, Bread & Butter identifies them and connects that to the rest of their activity on your page.

Bread & Butter Conversion Tools: If you want a dedicated on-site tool to capture emails or identify visitors, beyond your native forms, Bread & Butter also offers its own suite of optional Conversion Tools, floating lead capture forms with one-click social login, content gating for premium assets, and AI-triggered incentive popups, that plug directly into your Bread & Butter account, no separate app required. See our Conversion Tools overview for the full list.

What if I use Carrd as a landing page that links to checkout on a separate site or platform? This is common, for example a Carrd landing page linking out to a store built on Shopify, Squarespace, or Gumroad. Bread & Butter doesn't use cookies, it uses a GDPR-compliant identifier stored locally in the visitor's browser. Install the same tracking script on each domain, and Bread & Butter reconciles the activity into one visitor journey, even across different platforms.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Get your tracking script

  • Log into your Bread & Butter Dashboard
  • Go to Settings > App & Domains
  • Add your Carrd subdomain or custom domain
  • Copy the JavaScript tracking snippet provided (it includes your unique App ID)

If you're already using Google Tag Manager on your Carrd site, this is the easiest and most reliable way to install Bread & Butter, and it's the method we recommend. See our full Google Tag Manager installation guide for more detail.

Step 2: Add the script as a GTM tag

  • In your GTM container, create a new tag and choose Custom HTML
  • Paste the Bread & Butter tracking snippet into the tag
  • Set the trigger to All Pages
  • Save and Submit to publish the container

Step 3: Confirm it's working

  • Open your live Carrd site in a new browser or incognito window
  • Return to your Bread & Butter Dashboard and confirm visitor data is coming in

Managing the script through GTM also means future updates or changes to your tracking setup don't require editing your Carrd site directly.

Alternative: Manual install via Carrd's Embed element

If you're not using Google Tag Manager, install directly in Carrd instead. Requires the Pro Standard plan or higher.

Step 2: Add it to Carrd

  • Log into Carrd and open your site
  • Select Embed from the Add menu
  • Set Style to Hidden and Position to Head
  • Paste the tracking script
  • Click Save, then Publish Changes

Step 3: Confirm it's working

  • Open your live Carrd site in a new browser or incognito window
  • Return to your Bread & Butter Dashboard and confirm visitor data is coming in

Troubleshooting: If data isn't showing up, double-check that your App ID in the script matches your dashboard, and confirm your live Carrd URL is listed under Settings > Advanced Settings > Website Domains.
