Install Bread & Butter on PrestaShop

PrestaShop powers everything from product browsing to checkout, and Bread & Butter connects the same simple way it connects to Google Analytics or HubSpot: one script, no plugin.

In short: one script connects your PrestaShop store to Bread & Butter, no developer-heavy setup, just a copy-paste edit to a template file. It shows you who's a genuine prospect, not just a pageview, and which pages or campaigns are actually driving qualified interest. It works alongside PrestaShop's native newsletter block.

Once it's running, Bread & Butter watches how real visitors move through your store, not just how many pages loaded. It identifies who's showing genuine interest, builds a profile of what they're interested in, and surfaces that to you as a ranked list of your best leads instead of a wall of traffic numbers. For a store built on PrestaShop, that means you can finally see which products, pages, or campaigns are actually driving qualified interest, and which ones are just generating clicks that go nowhere.

A note before you start: PrestaShop doesn't have an admin settings box for pasting custom code, the way some other platforms do. Installing the script means editing a theme template file directly, so you'll need FTP or file-manager access to your store, or a developer who has it. This is exactly the kind of situation Google Tag Manager makes easier, since it's a one-time setup rather than something you touch again for future tracking changes.

Frequently asked questions for PrestaShop

Does this work on any PrestaShop plan? PrestaShop is free, open-source software, there's no plan tier to worry about. The only requirement is having file-level access to your store, either directly or through your hosting provider or developer.

Do I need a developer to install this? Not necessarily, but you will need access to your store's files (via FTP or your host's file manager) and a code editor, since there's no in-admin field for this. If you're not comfortable editing template files, this is a good one to hand to a developer or your hosting provider's support team.

Does this work with a custom domain, or only a PrestaShop-hosted subdomain? Either. The tracking script is embedded in the page itself, so it works the same way regardless of what domain your store is published under.

Does this track my native newsletter signup block too? Yes. If a visitor subscribes through PrestaShop's native newsletter subscription block, Bread & Butter identifies them and connects that to the rest of their activity on your site.

Can you see who reaches checkout? Checkout runs within your store's own theme and domain rather than a separate hosted checkout, so tracking generally has visibility into that flow. We haven't been able to fully confirm this from PrestaShop's public documentation, so treat full checkout-step coverage as something worth confirming in your own store.

Bread & Butter Conversion Tools: If you want a dedicated on-site tool to capture emails or identify visitors before they reach checkout, Bread & Butter also offers its own suite of optional Conversion Tools, floating lead capture forms with one-click social login, content gating for premium assets, and AI-triggered incentive popups, that plug directly into your Bread & Butter account, no separate app required. See our Conversion Tools overview for the full list.

What if my main website and my PrestaShop store run on separate domains? This is common, for example a main site on one domain with a store hosted on a separate subdomain. Bread & Butter doesn't use cookies, it uses a GDPR-compliant identifier stored locally in the visitor's browser. Install the same tracking script on each domain, and Bread & Butter reconciles the activity into one visitor journey, even across different platforms.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Get your tracking script

  • Log into your Bread & Butter Dashboard
  • Go to Settings > App & Domains
  • Add your PrestaShop subdomain or custom domain
  • Copy the JavaScript tracking snippet provided (it includes your unique App ID)

If you're already using Google Tag Manager on your store (or are willing to set it up once), this is the easier long-term path for PrestaShop, since it means you won't need to touch your theme files again for future tracking changes. See our full Google Tag Manager installation guide for more detail on setting up the GTM container itself. The container snippet still needs to go into your theme file using the steps below, just the one time.

Step 2: Add the GTM (or Bread & Butter) script to your theme

  • Access your store's files via FTP or your hosting provider's file manager
  • Go to Design > Theme & Logo in your PrestaShop back office to confirm your active theme's folder name
  • Open themes/your_theme/templates/_partials/head.tpl  in a code editor
  • Paste your GTM container snippet (or the Bread & Butter tracking script directly, if you're not using GTM), wrapped in Smarty {literal}  and {/literal}  tags
  • Save the file

Step 3: Clear your cache and confirm it's working

  • In your PrestaShop back office, go to Advanced Parameters > Performance and clear the cache
  • Open your live PrestaShop store in a new browser or incognito window
  • Return to your Bread & Butter Dashboard and confirm visitor data is coming in

Troubleshooting: If data isn't showing up, double-check that your App ID in the script matches your dashboard, confirm your live PrestaShop URL is listed under Settings > Advanced Settings > Website Domains, and make sure you cleared the cache after saving the template file.
